LTO WORM in brief
- Data can be written once and read many times. It cannot be overwritten or erased.
- You can keep appending to a WORM cartridge until it is full.
- Tamper protection is built into the cartridge memory and the factory-written servo format.
- Available from LTO-3 through LTO-10, at the same capacity as standard media.
What is LTO WORM tape?
LTO WORM (Write Once, Read Many) cartridges look and work like standard LTO data cartridges, but the drive will not overwrite or erase anything already on them. New data can be appended at the end of the recorded area. Existing data is permanent for the life of the tape.
That gives you an immutable copy: records that cannot be changed, whether by mistake, by a rogue insider or by ransomware. You get this at the same low cost per terabyte as ordinary LTO tape.
How WORM protection works
Protection is enforced in hardware, not just by software settings. Each WORM cartridge is identified as WORM in its cartridge memory (CM) chip, and a unique low-level pattern is written onto the tape at the factory. The drive checks both before allowing any write. Any attempt to tamper with the cartridge or overwrite existing data is refused, and the audit trail stays intact.
Who uses LTO WORM?
Regulatory compliance
Financial services, healthcare and public bodies with retention rules that require records to be stored in a non-rewritable, non-erasable format.
Legal & evidential
Police, legal and investigative teams storing digital evidence, CCTV and body-worn video where chain of custody matters.
Ransomware protection
An offline WORM copy cannot be encrypted or deleted, even by someone with full admin rights to your backup server.
Long-term heritage archives
Architectural drawings, land registry, scientific results and cultural collections that must never change.

Buying LTO WORM media
We supply WORM cartridges for LTO-10, LTO-9, LTO-8, LTO-7 and LTO-6 from the major manufacturers, and can source earlier generations on request. As with standard media, we can supply pre-printed barcode labels for your library on orders of 20 or more. WORM cartridges usually have a distinctive two-tone shell and WORM-specific barcodes, so your library and software can tell them apart.
Your backup or archive application must support WORM media. All the major ones do, including Veeam, Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, IBM Storage Protect and Spectra StorCycle.
