Why Google Workspace needs a backup
Google Workspace does not back up your data automatically. It offers only limited protection against deletion, overwriting and ransomware. Under the shared responsibility model, protecting your organisation’s data is up to you, not Google.
Isn’t Google Vault enough?
No. Google Vault is designed for retention and eDiscovery, not recovery. Vault exports are not built for large or bulk backups. They are limited to a small number of accounts and a single Google service at a time, cannot run many exports in parallel and cannot be scheduled automatically. Restoring from a Vault export is a slow, manual process. It is not a way to get a department working again quickly.
