LTO-10 has changed the economics of large-scale storage. With up to 40TB native on a single cartridge, it is designed for organisations whose data now runs to hundreds of terabytes or petabytes: backup repositories, media libraries, research data, surveillance video and AI training sets. These are the benefits that matter most in practice.

1. Much more capacity per cartridge

The standard LTO-10 cartridge holds 30TB native (75TB compressed), and the 40TB cartridge holds 40TB native (100TB compressed). That is up to 2.2× the capacity of LTO-9 in the same physical slot. You can consolidate more data into fewer cartridges, without adding library frames or data centre floor space.

  • Fewer library slots and slot licences needed for the same data
  • Less offsite storage space and fewer courier trips
  • Faster full-library inventories and easier media management

2. Efficient data transfer

LTO-10 drives stream at 400MB/s native, and up to 1,200MB/s with compressible data on 32Gb Fibre Channel drives. New cartridges also skip the first-load optimisation needed on LTO-9, so fresh media is ready straight away. The result:

  • Shorter backup windows per drive
  • Quicker restores of large data sets from local media
  • No delays when loading hundreds of new cartridges

3. Lower cost per terabyte

Tape already has the lowest cost per terabyte of any storage medium. LTO-10 extends that lead, because each cartridge, slot and shelf now holds much more. Tape also has no egress charges, needs no power at rest and has a long service life, so the total cost of ownership for long-term data is well below disk or public cloud. Industry TCO studies regularly find tape to be several times cheaper than disk for multi-year retention.

4. Strong security

  • AES-256 encryption in the drive, with post-quantum-ready key exchange, helps protect sensitive data and supports GDPR compliance.
  • WORM cartridges make data immutable, protecting it from tampering, alteration or accidental deletion.
  • An offline air gap: a cartridge that is not in a drive cannot be encrypted by ransomware or deleted by a compromised administrator account.

5. Durability and a 30-year archive life

LTO-10 media is rated for up to 30 years of archive life in the correct storage conditions. LTO cartridges are also built to withstand thousands of loads and repeated end-to-end passes. The strontium-doped Barium Ferrite particles are chemically stable, so data stays readable without the periodic refreshes that disk arrays need.

6. Sustainability

A tape cartridge on a shelf or in a library slot uses no electricity. For data that is rarely accessed, moving it from spinning disk to LTO-10 can cut energy use and the related carbon emissions significantly. That matters more and more for organisations reporting against net-zero targets. Higher density also means fewer cartridges to manufacture, transport and eventually recycle.

7. Open standard and a clear roadmap

LTO is an open format with several manufacturers of drives and media, so you are not locked into a single vendor. The LTO Program’s roadmap continues to LTO-14. See the LTO roadmap.

Is LTO-10 right for your organisation?

LTO-10 delivers the most value if you are starting fresh or storing hundreds of terabytes or more. If you need to keep reading LTO-8 tapes, LTO-9 may still be the better fit. See LTO-9 vs LTO-10, or browse our LTO-10 tapes.
