UK LTO tape specialists since 1994

Every business needs a backup it can rely on when disaster strikes, whether that means hardware failure, human error, a flood or a ransomware attack. LTO-9 tape remains one of the most dependable and cost-effective backup targets available. This guide explains how to use it well.

High capacity for efficient backup

With 18TB native per cartridge (up to 45TB compressed), LTO-9 fits large backup sets onto a handful of tapes. Fewer cartridges per backup means fewer tape changes, simpler rotation and shorter, less interrupted backup jobs. It also makes it practical to keep weeks or months of backup history in a modest autoloader or library.

Fast backup and recovery

LTO-9 streams at 400MB/s native and up to 1,000MB/s compressed. That is about 1.44TB per hour per drive before compression. Restores run at the same streaming speed, which makes tape one of the fastest ways to bring back large volumes of data from a local copy.

Plan for media optimisation

New LTO-9 cartridges are calibrated the first time they are loaded (about 40 minutes on average). Optimise new media ahead of time, rather than during your first backup window.

Offline protection against cyber threats

A backup stored on an LTO-9 cartridge that has been ejected, or is held in a library partition your backup server does not control, is offline. It cannot be encrypted, deleted or altered over the network, which is exactly what you need when ransomware has compromised everything else. Combine this with AES-256 drive encryption, and WORM cartridges where you need immutability.

A typical LTO-9 backup rotation

A widely used scheme is grandfather-father-son (GFS):

  • Daily incrementals go to disk for fast restores
  • Weekly full backups are copied to LTO-9 and kept for four to five weeks
  • Monthly full backups are kept on LTO-9 for 12 months
  • Yearly full backups are kept on LTO-9 (or WORM) for as long as policy requires, and stored offsite

Your backup software handles the scheduling, tracks cartridges by barcode, and tells you which tapes to take offsite and which to bring back for reuse.

Long-term data preservation

LTO-9 media is rated for up to 30 years of archive life when stored at 16–25°C and 20–50% relative humidity. It withstands normal temperature and humidity changes well, which makes it suitable for long-term compliance, regulatory and historical retention.

Cost-effective and scalable

LTO-9 has a low cost per terabyte, and capacity grows simply by adding cartridges. There are no big up-front storage purchases and no monthly bills that rise with your data. Because LTO-9 drives also read and write LTO-8, existing LTO-8 media can stay in rotation while you move over.

LTO-9 alongside disk and cloud

LTO-9 works best as part of a layered design: disk for speed, tape for an offline and long-retention copy, and optionally cloud for an extra offsite copy. That combination meets the 3-2-1-1-0 rule described in our data backup guide.
